Dido and Aeneas was an opera composed by the English Baroque composer Henry Purcell. It had its first documented performance in 1689, at Josias Priest's girls' school in London. Dido (voice) Russell Braun Aeneas (voice) Ann Monoyios Belinda (voice) Shari Saunders First Witch (voice) Meredith Hall Second Witch (voice) Aeneas, prince of Troy, is shipwrecked off the coast of Africa by the goddess Juno. He is taken in by Queen Dido of Carthage. He then finds himself torn between love and destiny. The great Roman poet, Virgil (70 BC to 19BC) wrote a really long poem (12 books) called "The Aeneid".

Her sister and handmaiden, Belinda, tries desperately to cheer her up, but Dido is depressed, saying that she and peace are nothing more than strangers now. Aeneas and his people have found themselves in Carthage after a treacherous sea voyage.

Dido and Aeneas is usually performed by a large string ensemble, but here Haïm discreetly doubles some of the parts with oboes, a bassoon, and in the Witches' Dance in Act II, a recorder.
